Dr. Shane R. Jimerson is a Distinguished Professor of School Psychology in the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology. His research focuses on promoting children’s academic, social, emotional, behavioral, and mental-health well-being in schools around the world.
Dr. Jimerson’s scholarship (500+ publications and 400+ presentations) focuses on helping schools create safe, supportive, and effective learning environments that promote student success. His research has advanced science and practice, including school mental health, bullying prevention, school safety, crisis prevention and response, student engagement, dropout prevention, grief support, and multi-tiered systems of support. He is particularly adept at translating research into practical strategies that educators, families, and communities can use to improve outcomes for children and adolescents. Through collaborations across the United States and more than 50 countries around the world, his work has advanced evidence-based practices, policies, and programs that support the healthy development and well-being of youth. Throughout his career, he has secured more than $20 million in competitive funding to support research, training, and service initiatives benefiting children, families, schools, and communities.
Dr. Jimerson completed doctoral studies in both School Psychology and Child Development at the University of Minnesota in 1997. He is a Nationally Certified School Psychologist and a Board Certified Expert in Traumatic Stress. A Fellow of the American Psychological Association and a Chartered Member of the British Psychological Society, he has served as Editor of four of the five leading journals in school psychology. Internationally recognized for his scholarly, professional, and leadership contributions, he has received more than 50 honors and awards, including early-career, mid-career, and multiple lifetime achievement awards from the International School Psychology Association, American Educational Research Association, American Psychological Association Division 16, American Psychological Association Division 52, National Association of School Psychologists, the California Association of School Psychologists, Trainers of School Psychology, Society for the Study of School Psychology, among others. His distinctions also include honorary doctorates from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Greece) and the University of Liège (Belgium), as well as honorary and visiting professorships at universities in more than 20 countries.
